Blue-chip equity index FTSE 100 reached its highest level in 14 years yesterday as the UK rallied to catch up with stateside markets on signs that Ukraine and Russia were working to end the conflict in eastern Ukraine.

The index briefly hit 6,898.62 points, its highest level since early 2000, after Ukrainian president Petro Poroshenko's press office said a "permanent ceasefire" had been agreed with Russia.

The Evening Standard’s executive editor James Ashton told London Live the FTSE had been the “laggard” as the companies within it had been greater impacted by uncertainty in the Eurozone.

He added that the level is the highest since the Millennium dotcom bubble pushed up the market.
